Notes on Pain Free Living

Neck & Back Pain Are Common Complaints in the Workplace

With today’s technology in the palm of our hand we are constantly working. We may spend eight hours at our desk and then another few on our phones or laptops. This has led to an epidemic known as “text” neck.

According to an article in the Washington Journal “ The human head weighs about a dozen pounds. But as the neck bends forward and down, the weight on the cervical spine begins to increase. At a 15-degree angle, this weight is about 27 pounds, at 30 degrees it’s 40 pounds, at 45 degrees it’s 49 pounds, and at 60 degrees it’s 60 pounds.” ....as a comparison imagine carrying an 8 year old around your neck for several hours a day!!!

Tom DiAngelis, president of the American Physical Therapy Association‘s Private Practice Section stayed,  “As you stretch the tissue for a long period of time, it gets sore, it gets inflamed,” It can also cause muscle strain, pinched nerves, herniated disks and, over time, it can even remove the neck’s natural curve.”

What can be done to treat this condition and alleviate the pain?

Bonnie Prudden Myotherapy® releases trigger points in muscles using fingers, knuckles and elbows directly on the trigger points. As the trigger point is released the muscle involved is run through a series of motions that teach the muscle it’s full range of motion and it’s optimal resting state. The patient is also trained in the exercises needed to prevent the redevelopment of the trigger points involved.
